Accra, Ghana – October 28, 2025 – The Legal Aid Commission, Ghana, proudly commenced its 2025 Legal Aid Week Celebration with an impactful Official Launch and Panel Discussion held yesterday, Monday, October 27, at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra. The event, supported by German Cooperation and GIZ, set a powerful tone for the week under the compelling theme: “Enhancing Access to Justice for Women and Girls in Ghana: Harnessing the Maputo Protocol.”

The launch brought together distinguished guests, legal professionals, and advocates committed to strengthening justice delivery in Ghana. We were profoundly honoured by the presence of the Rep of H.E. Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, the Legal Advisor to the President who graced the occasion as our Special Guest of Honour.

Edmund A. Foley, the Executive Director of the Legal Aid Commission, highlighted the Commission’s unique role in operationalizing Article 294 of Ghana’s constitution, providing vital legal assistance, aid, and awareness in both civil and criminal cases. A key announcement underscored the government’s support, revealing plans to establish a 24-hour legal aid call centre. This initiative, in fulfilment of the 24-hour economy policy, aims to ensure continuous access to essential legal aid services for all citizens.

The panel discussion further delved into the intricacies of harnessing the Maputo Protocol to enhance justice for women and girls, fostering a robust dialogue among experts and attendees alike. The collective commitment demonstrated at the launch underscores a clear path towards a more equitable and just society for all Ghanaians.

The Legal Aid Commission extends its sincere gratitude to all participants and the public for making this a truly memorable event, and looks forward to a week of impactful discussions, awareness campaigns, and community engagement.
